Fear of Change

Acknowledging that there will be a fear of change is critical to the success of your Portal. There can be many reasons for a fear of change:

  • We have always done it this way.
  • I don’t believe that parent engagement makes a difference for student learning.
  • It will be more work and I’m already too busy.
  • I don’t have anything worthwhile to contribute.
  • No one comes to our Parent Council meetings now. How will a Portal make parents care more?
  • We already have a great website for parent information.

Building a Change Management Plan helps you to assess readiness in all the groups that are involved. Readiness includes identifying what fears may be in play and designing strategies to address those fears. Be mindful that some of the issues may be deep-rooted in the culture of your school or district and any change will take time.
